The Most Critical Strategies To Keep In Mind When Playing On Clay Tennis Courts

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

If you’re an active tennis player and you’ve never played on red clay, this is a surface that you’ll surely appreciate. There’s a ton of history behind red clay, and playing on it is a truly magical experience.

Playing on clay can be an extremely enjoyable experience, though anyone living in North America may have a hard time finding a court. Regardless, it’s a surface that many lovers of the sport truly cherish.

If you’ve never played on red clay courts before, I’d like to share a few pieces of knowledge that you may find informative about them.

First of all, the most effective strategy on this surface has always been one from the baseline. Players traditionally rely on powerful ground strokes as a means of winning their matches.

Unfortunately, players with big serves and proficient net games simply won’t find as much success on clay courts. The impact of a hard hit serve or a quick rush to the net simply doesn’t have the same effectiveness.

Why is this the case? Well, it all has to do with the surface that the matches are being played on. You see, clay is a thick surface and one that slows the ball down as a result.

This is very different from what you’d observe on grass and even hard tennis courts, as the ball almost skids off the ground on these other surfaces. These are faster courts, unlike clay ones.

The ball bounces very slowly off the ground on a clay court, as the surface literally slows down its speed. This is a good thing if you’re a baseline player, as you’ll have more time to prepare for each shot.

Rallies are typically longer, and what you’d normally never be able to get to on a hard or grass court may be well within reach when it comes to clay.

If you’re a fast runner, you’ll certainly enjoy this aspect of the courts. It should come as no surprise that some of the best clay court players are the fastest ones.

Advice For Tennis On Hard Courts

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

There are a handful of different tennis court surfaces. Each one has its own unique set of attributes, adding an interesting element to this already exciting sport.

More tennis courts these days have a hard surface than any other kind. This wasn’t always the case, as the origins of the sport trace back to grass and clay courts. Still, there are many reasons that many choose to build hard courts, most notably the fact that they’re low maintenance.

Let’s go into a few of the details about this type of court to see what makes it unique. If you’ve ever played on one, I’m sure you’ll be able to relate to some of the things that I point out here.

This is a fast type of surface to play on, and this may work for or against you when it comes to playing a match. If you have a big serve, you’ll thrive here as your serve will skid once it bounces, making it fast and difficult for your opponent to return.

When it comes to ground strokes, you can do some damage here too by hitting the ball hard and with heavy spin. This will keep the pressure on your opponent, especially if the ball is kept deep. Beware though, your opponent could do the same to you, giving you a hard time in the process.

If you’re a fast runner, you won’t be as well off as you will be when playing on clay. Since the ball moves quickly, you’ll have a harder time tracking down balls.

Still, this isn’t to say that your speed won’t be an asset during a match, because it absolutely can and will. You’re far better off as a fast runner playing here than you would be on grass, and a speedy player is certainly difficult to defeat if there are other weapons that player possesses as well.

If you enjoy volleying, you’ll like the perks that come with volleying on hard courts. Since the surface is fast, some hard hit volleys to the corners of the court will be extremely difficult for your opponent to return.

In light of the above, develop a strategy on these courts that lends itself well to your game. Most of all, have some fun in the process.

A New Way Of Exploring The Outdoors: Mountain Biking

Friday, January 1st, 2010

These days, sports are more about innovation and challenges than ever before. Not content to simply go surfing, people now drop in out of helicopters, get towed out to the middle of the ocean to ride weird swells, and take on waves taller than skyscrapers with little to no protection. And that’s just the sport of surfing!

A growing number of alternative sports for independent-minded people of all ages have been succeeding lately in The States, but nothing is doing quite as well as mountain biking, which has managed to carve out a niche previously only seen for skateboarders, who transformed from weirdos to mainstream. With a variety of different styles and methods, mountain biking is quickly sweeping the nation.

Rather than simply riding a bicycle across town, or even riding one around a track, mountain biking freed the bicycle from its pavement environment. Now, riding a bicycle was more about balance, since mountain trails had to be dealt with. Different riders, in urban areas, even put their own twist on things and figured out ways to make city riding challenging, taking to natural obstacles in much the same way that skateboarders did.

As mountain biking has caught on in different communities and attracted different types of athletes, distinct schools have emerged, and it’s easy to see how they might continue to develop. From basic beginnings of just dealing with a landscape and the bicycle, things have grown and changed. Now, mountain biking can be as difficult or as simple as a rider desires, depending on the school he or she decides to participate in.

The best way to get to know mountain biking is by getting to know the different categories of riding. There’s trails, where bicyclists can be either in a more urban area or off-road, but the main goal of hopping over different objects without placing feet on the ground. It looks a little bit like those courses with jumps and hills, but is a little more extreme.

Probably the most famous variation of mountain biking is the kind seen everywhere from ESPN’s X-Games to “bike parks” around the country. The style, dirt jumping, or big dirt riding, involves bicyclists with a significant amount of padding and smaller, durable mountain bikes taking on a large dirt jump. Riders are judged by the tricks they perform in the air, usually variations of twisting, flipping, and maneuvering the bike but still having a safe landing. While fun to watch, this is definitely not the spot for aspiring mountain bicyclists to begin.

For those living in urban areas, with little or no access to the great outdoors, mountain biking is still a pertinent sport. One of the most popular variations on the more extreme styles of riding is street or urban riding, where people take on obstacle courses of man-made objects on mountain bikes. The bicycles used are smaller in both frames and wheels, and often would not transition well to endurance riding out on open trails.

The best jumping off point for most riders is simple cross-country, which can encompass any number of different environments, terrains, and conditions. A cross-country mountain bike ride can be a simple affair, with lots of break time to enjoy the weather, or it can be more strenuous and involve a great deal of attempting to ride uphill, to navigate slippery or muddy areas, or having to jump around obstacles.

Other more extreme variations on regular cross-country mountain biking that involve more remote locations include downhill, where riders just try to get to the bottom of a run as quickly as possible, as well as short cross, which is a combination of downhill, where the idea is to get to the bottom as fast as possible, but this time on even more challenging slopes. The extreme short slopes have a lot more obstacles and there is a much higher risk of crashing.

No matter the style, there’s no mistaking how helpful this sport can be to building a connection for the young and the old alike with taking their sporting endeavors outside. Like many sports of innovation, mountain biking and all of its new forms is truly here to stay.
