Travelling to Zambia? Victoria Falls Is One Place You Can’t Afford To Miss

Also known as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya (the smoke that thunders), Victoria Falls is a signature feature along the Zambezi river – Zambia’s largest river. Deafening roars and a thick blanket of mist are produced as millions of litres of water falls down the 1708 m wide cliff.

The mist becomes so thick during the rainy season, making it totally difficult to view Victoria Falls. On the other hand, the falls becomes too dull during the peak of the dry season. The two seasons are not ideal for visits and the best time to tour Victoria Falls is between July and August as the season is dry winter. A helicopter ride or a panoramic view of the falls is recommended, although most people like to experience the falls from the ground where they can enjoy feeling the spray on their faces. In this case, a raincoat comes in handy as you are bound to get wet.

The famous Victoria Falls Bridge is situated a stone throw away from the falls. The bridge joins Zambia and Zimbabwe and it offers excellent views of River Zambezi and the adjacent forests. Most visitors to the site take part in Bunjee jumping activity – a popular leisure activity at the bridge. At 111 metres long, Victoria Falls is the world’s longest bungee distance. Other interesting sites that can be spotted from the bridge include Cahora Bassa and Kariba dams.

The massive Kariba dam in Zambia covers a total of 300km while Cahora Bassa dam in Mozambique is 280 km wide. Sport fishing is a popular activity in both dams. Tiger fish, which grows up to 10kg, is the most common fish in the dams. Other fish species that can be tagged include the red-breated bream and the yellow-belly bream among others.

Zambezi River offers some of the best Africa wildlife viewing safaris in the region due to the numerous parks situated along its course. These include the Victoria Falls, Mana pools park as well as the Zambezi.

Zambezi has unlimited amount of hotels and lodges to choose from. They range from luxury five star hotels and mattress camping to outdoor tents. Different adventures are bound to make your stay unforgettable regardless of what you choose. Victoria Falls, Tongabezi lodge, Royal Livingstone hotel and Thorn Tree lodge are the most popular hotels. For those who want to be near the river and around the wild game Kasaka river lodge,Mtondo river and Mwambashi river lodge are the best place to choose. Other nice places to choose from for fishing are Lake Kariba, the Chikanka Island hotel and the Chete Island deluxe tented safari lodge.
